In 1972, as soon as the Maltese placed aside their former colonial’s currency, the British pound and adopted the Maltese lira, Malta issued the first commemorative coin denominated in the Maltese lira. The Jean De La Valette commemorative coins issued in 2007 were the last Maltese commemorative coins to be denominated in the Maltese lira as Malta joined the eurozone on 1 January 2008.
